In a traditional PC hardware cycle, AMD's new RX 6600XT could have been a welcome stopgap for a budget audience. Over the years, we've regularly seen this kind of GPU from both major GPU manufacturers. Those companies regularly turn down some specs, repurpose sub-optimal chips, and get a moderately priced option to follow their biggest kahunas for anybody tiptoeing into solid 1080p or 1440p gaming options on PC.

Unfortunately, there's nothing traditional about the latest traditional PC hardware cycle. Today's supply-and-demand ecosystem of computer GPUs looks like something out of a terrifying Dario Argento film. The horrors that lurk in every shadow include chip shortages and bot-fueled scalper waves.



And that context really helps us frame the $379 RX 6600XT—an underpowered, overpriced, and downright disappointing GPU whose primary sales pitch is 1080p gaming. That category is famously CPU-limited, not GPU-limited, so this GPU's mileage will truly vary based on your rig. 

In general, Nvidia's RTX 3060 Ti (at only $20 more MSRP) wins handily, while Nvidia's RTX 2060 Super (which launched for $399 in July 2019) is within shouting distance of this brand-new card. That latter yardstick in particular makes AMD's newest product a hard GPU to recommend.


Any changes in cabin pressure yet?

This is arguably the loudest example yet of GPU manufacturers getting in on the sector's recent price inflation, as opposed to letting the market do so. A $379 price tag is not a great cost for the 6600XT, but it's not clear that a more appropriate MSRP, like $299 or $319, would lead to a fairer price reaching average customers. "Street value" is a real thing. When calculating actual market prices, for example, we're closer to the $500 range for both aforementioned Nvidia GPUs.

As such, I once again have to smother this piece in reminders about general GPU availability. And, once again, AMD (like its competition Nvidia) isn't forthcoming about how many of its new cards will go on sale later this week. The best data point we have is how far AMD trails behind Nvidia on the metric of installed GPUs in the wild. Steam's publicly available hardware surveys point to Nvidia's RTX 3000 cards landing inside far more Steam-connected PCs than AMD's RDNA 2 cards. That could be because Nvidia has sold more cards, or at least sold more cards to active Steam gamers. Either way, I don't have a firm indication that the 6600XT will dramatically change the availability story.

When it comes down to it, the RX 6600 is a peculiar GPU option for one main reason: its pledge of solid PC performance at 1080p resolution, as opposed to 1440p or higher. AMD swears that this differential bears out in its own cherry picked test results, promising statistically significant 1080p gains over Nvidia's RTX 3060 (MSRP: $329). Its charts include tests run on a Ryzen 5 5600X system, where the RX 6600 beat the cheaper Nvidia card with games set to 1080p resolution and identical "maxed out" visual settings at anything from 5 percent to 30 percent.

However, Ars favors 4K resolutions for GPU tests, as anything lower can contribute more CPU-bound limitations to resulting frame rate charts. Our measurements are meant to offer you percentages of difference that you can then expect to scale to your own PC. When AMD's RDNA 2 line began promising significantly better performance at 1440p over Nvidia's competition—and claimed this was an intentional engineering direction on their part—we ran resulting tests. Sure enough, we saw significant percentage gains that weren't necessarily CPU bound.


But dropping all the way to 1080p with a testing rig that maxes out at an Intel i7-8700K GPU means we can't reliably duplicate AMD's own 1080p performance-boost sales pitch. Our percentages in those tests vary with both higher and lower results based on the game, and these games are stretching into 120 fps territory and above at that point, which is typically the threshold where a CPU begins to top out. Our 1080p charts are therefore, in our opinion, misleading enough for average customers to not be worth factoring into our usual comparison matrix.


I'm not printing AMD's exact numbers because we cannot verify them, and because their own 1080p tests weren't also conducted on the $399 RTX 3060 Ti, nor on 2019's RTX 2060 Super. Having already written my own negative review of the RTX 3060, I understand why AMD might be tempted to have the press directly compare the RX 6800 to that card. However, that card's MSRP is roughly 15 percent cheaper—and AMD's list of 1080p results for that card are, whaddya know, roughly 15 percent worse.

The tests mostly speak for themselves

We even threw in 2016's Nvidia GTX 1070 for good measure. Despite this article's caveats about lower testing resolutions, I think it's fair at this point for you to see where these GPUs land when pushing raw 1440p resolution.


The first obvious point of contention is how much the RTX 3060 Ti spanks a GPU that's only $20 of MSRP cheaper. Though again, that's "MSRP," with "suggested" getting italics, underlines, and red font. In a GPU market where MSRP mattered, that'd be seriously embarrassing stuff for AMD. AMD's only real saving grace is a market that it arguably has very little control of.


So it's arguably fairer to rewind to the RTX 2060 Super, a competitor's GPU that's closer to what you might have recently purchased or searched for on eBay, and see how the RX 6600XT measures comparatively. In many benchmarks, both 1440p and 4K, AMD's latest budget-minded card exceeds the 2060 Super, with particularly impressive gains in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Borderlands 3, and Hitman 3.



But other software ranges from neck and neck to an outright win for the older Nvidia GPU. For straight-up rasterization, the RTX 2060 does better with Grand Theft Auto V and Watch Dogs Legion with ray tracing disabled. And once ray tracing is flipped on, the RX 6600XT is handily surpassed, possibly because RDNA 2's architecture attaches ray tracing power directly to the number of compute units on the silicon (as opposed to breaking that processing out to a separate core).

Speaking of: as of press time, AMD appears to have some driver-level optimization to do on the ray tracing front. Even with identical settings enabled, Control's ray tracing mode looks decidedly worse on the RX 6600XT, as if it's struggling to render the full number of rays or the full resolution of related reflections. And Watch Dogs Legion currently crashes upon every game load so long as ray tracing is enabled on this GPU. This isn't necessarily a universal issue with RX 6800XT and ray tracing, as tests like 3DMark's Port Royal benchmark work fine.

AMD's current lack of differentiators doesn’t help

In worse news, many of the above benchmarks and tests exclude Nvidia's proprietary DLSS from the conversation, which any "RTX"-branded GPU from as far back as 2018 can tap into. If you enable this mode in compatible games, the GPU's dedicated cores will lean on a machine-learning model to refine and upscale lower pixel counts in real time, all while running faster since your PC isn't rendering as many pixels.



DLSS isn't perfect, and in particular, its latest big-splash premiere in Red Dead Redemption 2 adds some fuzzy tree and foliage results that aren't always becoming. But over time, Nvidia emerges with yet another updated DLSS upscaling model that does more to decrease ghosting, increase fine-tuned detail, and otherwise look more and more like witchcraft. (I have a hunch RDR2's DLSS mode will look better before long.)


At this point, I'd argue that DLSS's "quality" mode, which runs at roughly 80 percent native resolution, all in all exceeds native resolution combined with temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) in terms of general image quality. The same cannot be said for AMD's admittedly burgeoning open source alternative, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), which messily upscales lower resolutions without having its own machine-learning model. Placing a bet on lower-powered AMD GPUs and on FSR maxing them out 9-12 months from now seems risky. To be fair, I said the same about DLSS in its earliest days, and clearly I'm singing a different tune now.


Beyond that, however, each GPU manufacturer has its own versions of very similar back-end boosts, including toggles for lower latency, automatic "safe" overclocking, variable rate shading, and optimized I/O processes. You might squeeze a higher number of frames out of one camp's tweaks but not enough where I would argue that either camp has a system-level lead on its competition for great 3D performance for the cost.


Bottom line: AMD has already beaten AMD to 1080p power

Instead, in terms of GPU "future-proofing," Nvidia has better ray tracing and upsampling performance across the board, while AMD tends to pack its RDNA 2 GPUs with more L3 cache and a higher capacity of VRAM. But the RX 6600XT blows this reputation for AMD somewhat, since it maxes out at 8GB GDDR6 VRAM (33 percent less than the $479 MSRP 6700XT) and 32MB of L3 cache (a whopping 67 percent less). Additionally, this card's downgrade from the RX 6700XT shrinks memory bandwidth from a 192-bit bus to 128-bit and reduces its compute unit count by 20 percent.


The biggest victory you might shout about with this GPU is its price-to-wattage ratio, with a TPD of 160W—a little over two-thirds that of the 6700XT, and 80 percent of the RTX 3060 Ti. Its efficiency ratio isn't necessarily insane for the overall teraFLOPs on offer, but it's worth noting all the same.


The thing that gets me about this GPU is that it's arguably beaten by another AMD-powered product: the $299 Xbox Series S, which aims to deliver solid 1080p and 60 fps performance with a Zen 2 and RDNA 2 SoC. And thus far, Series S is proving quite impressive, particularly with next-gen teases of games like Psychonauts 2 and Halo Infinite. We're generally seeing the cheaper new Xbox's 1080p/60 fps promise bear fruit.


Obviously, a closed console like the Series S has tons of drawbacks compared to a fully fledged PC GPU, particularly the fact that its "next-gen" boosts only work with compatible games. But when your GPU costs more than a successful all-in-one "future-proofed" 1080p console, you're asking store clerks to awkwardly shrug their shoulders the instant they're asked a difficult price-to-performance question

Tomorrow is Samsung's big event for the back half of 2021, and in addition to launching some foldable smartphones, the company is expected to reveal the Galaxy Watch 4 and the big Wear OS revamp it is working on with Google. 

Google is cooking up the first major Wear OS release since 2018, and Samsung is abandoning Tizen for smartwatches and going all-in on Wear OS with the Galaxy Watch 4. Last night, Samsung took the wraps off the main SoC for the Galaxy Watch 4, and compared to what Wear OS usually gets, Samsung is shipping a beast of an SoC.


The "Samsung Exynos W920" will be a multi-generational leap in performance for Wear OS. Samsung says this is a 5 nm chip with two ARM Cortex A55 cores and an ARM Mali-G68 GPU. For the always-on display mode, there's an additional Cortex M55 CPU, which can keep the watch face ticking along while using minimal power. There's also an integrated LTE modem for on-the-go connectivity.



Compared to Samsung's previous smartwatch chip, the Tizen-only Exynos 9110 (10 nm, 2x Cortex A53), the company is promising "around 20 percent" better CPU performance and "ten times better graphics performance." Remember that the Exynos 9110 is from 2018, so those comparative numbers are inflated, but at 5 nm, this is a more modern chip than Wear OS has ever seen.


Wear OS has suffered for years at the hands of Qualcomm, which has been starving the ecosystem of quality SoCs for wearables. Most people's last experience with Wear OS is the Snapdragon Wear 2100 or 3100 SoCs, both of which were ancient Cortex A7 CPUs built on a 28 nm process. Qualcomm introduced a slightly more modern chip, the Wear 4100 in 2020 (a Cortex A53-based, 12 nm chip), but almost no manufacturers actually shipped that chip a year later, and we're still getting Wear 3100 launches today. Qualcomm's answer to Samsung's chip will be the Wear 5100, which isn't due until 2022.


So now we know that Samsung's chip looks great on paper. Wear OS is getting a real hardware company back on board instead of the hordes of fashion brands it was surviving on previously, and the Galaxy Watch 4 is shaping up to be a quality piece of hardware. What is Google doing with the software, though? The company has said next to nothing about Wear OS 3.0. We'll hopefully hear a lot more about the operating system tomorrow. Expecting to hear more about Google's OS at a Samsung event feels a little questionable, but that's how this collaboration works now, apparently

Most motherboard manufacturers have already posted lists of boards they expect to meet Windows 11's requirements, and some are going a step further by releasing new BIOS updates that enable the integrated TPMs in Intel and AMD processors by default. 


While it usually isn't too difficult to switch the TPM on manually, each motherboard manufacturer keeps this setting in a different place, and the way the setting is labeled differs depending on whether you're using an Intel or AMD chip or what motherboard you're configuring.
